    Angry Dumped AVG antivirus

I've just dumped AVG in favor of Avira AntiVir Personal. New version 10 just came out:

This is not the first time I've switched from one to the other, but AVG has become such a resource hog and so ineffective that it's time to switch back. No problems with FL on XP with Avira so far. To be fair, I've heard good things about Avast! as well, but I've never used them so can't comment.

Bottom line, dump AVG for one of these two.

    Here's a few other security must-haves:

SpyBot-Search & Destroy, on-demand spyware scanner. (I've dumped Ad-Aware a long time ago as being useless bloatware)

Sandboxie helps minimize infection by isolating your browser and it's files. Not quite virtualization, but close.

SpywareBlaster protects your system from known spyware. It doesn't run in the background, no resources. Just run, update, protect, and end.

Likewise, these will help protect XP. "Small tool which disables the default threats of a Windows XP installation."

I don't have a firewall recommendation, as I mostly rely on the router's hardware based firewall, so I just use XP's built-in software firewall.

    Default Other Firewalls

While I do use XP's built-in software firewall, I still have the kid's PCs on W2K as I don't have a lot of XP licenses available. For those W2K systems I use Ghostwall. It's a bit of a pain to set up but nice that I can 'ban' specific IP ranges, and it has a nice 'Block All' button for when you think something's up you have a 'panic button' to push to sever connection.

grats fro you picked one of the top AV on the home based market however its only downside is that its #1 for false positives...but better safe then sorry no?

if you will want to try something might I suggest avast its what I've used for the last 6 years or so, I've switched most of MG to it and soon PX....he just doesn't know yet.

or if you want the number 1 for the last couple of years its called "g data anti virus" shit always scores top in testing and the scanners fast as hell but its pay only and brother good luck finding a "free" copy

These are all options based on the personal/home AV products....basically yes the 5,000 dollar copy of norton corporate will prolly do better at detection but who has the home network so big as to warrant that.....and an all windows network at that......

    as for firewall

COMODO is the best in my opinion doesn't ask too many questions doesnt try to do the AVs job for it and always scores in the top 5 (95%+)

Online Armor- Just because your paranoid and clicking 50 questions to run one app doesnt mean the world isn't out to get you, but the sure as hell wont get in your computer. #1 more secure firewall for last 3 years but omg is asks alot of shit ALL THE TIME. almost always clears 99% of tests/attacks

Outpost-likes to manage a little too much of your system but over all is very quiet and easy to use, scores well most of the time but the least few months its been on the decline only clearing about mid 70% lately

    firewall nerd mode:

got an extra tower with at least 300mhz? why not make it a hardware firewall/router? Commercial routers dont do shit as a firewall the "SIP firewall" in them is a joke. go to www.ipfire.org its a linux firewall based OS with many features like: DHCP, DynDNS, Web proxy, VPN, IDS,content blocking (like for the young ones) and so much more. With a linux based network running iptables except to see speeds increase from local transfer as well as internet downloads. Its very easy to setup and even with very basic networking and linux knowledge you can have real piece of mind in the internet.

    i suggest:
Avira Personal - antivirus, runtime av
    Adaware - antispyware, runtime as
    Malwarebytes, antispyware as needed

all of which can be obtained from download.com. for firewalls, i use 3 tiers of firewalls mixed between software and hardware.

use these and stop looking at porn and you should be ok.
